Action Alert Save the Minnesota Political Campaign Partial Public Subsidy

Immediate Action requested:

Contact your representatives in St. Paul about the Omnibus State Government Finance Budget Bill and tell them that you oppose any bill that eliminates the partial public campaign funding subsidy for candidates running for office in Minnesota! In particular, please contact the two legislators most responsible for trying to eliminate the partial public campaign funding subsidy, Rep. Sarah Anderson, Plymouth 44B and Sen. Mary Kiffmeyer, SD 30.

Background and Talking Points:

Spending limits allow newcomers and the ordinary citizen to run for office, help keep our campaigns from becoming a war of who spends most, and allow for a more even playing field where each citizen’s voice matters.

The public subsidy has been in law for 40 years and has had bipartisan support.

In 2016, virtually all candidates for legislature and constitutional offices agreed to abide by the spending limits in exchange for partial public funding. Eliminating this will undermine Minnesota’s history of free and fair elections.

Without these limits, campaign spending will increase sharply, candidates who reject special interest money will have little chance of winning, and our political system will become even more beholden to the interests of the wealthy donors and “Dark Money”.
